The British Carbon Group is pleased to announce the next conference in this important series, where work performed on and in relation to nuclear graphite in order to support the continuing operation of the Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors in the UK is presented and subjected to peer review from other British and international expertise.
Nuclear graphite, both the nuclear ‘moderator’ and the structural material of the reactor cores, is subject to “damage” from fast neutrons which affects many physical and mechanical properties as well as causing dimensional changes in the components, whilst the irradiation from gamma rays of the coolant gas within the graphite pores leads to oxidation and a consequent reduction in strength. EdF-Energy has invested in large amounts of work in house, through irradiation tests in research reactors, through consulting engineering companies and through university research departments, against the potential return of extended reactor lifetime, and strives continuously to improve the confidence in its predictions of future changes in graphite properties and in the integrity of its safety cases, which are independently assessed by the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

This is a residential conference, and hotel room costs will be included in the registration fees which will be announced shortly. Delegates do NOT need to book their own accommodation, but any special requirements should be noted on the registration form. Accompanying persons are welcome. The registration fee will also include an evening visit to The Lakeland Motor Museum followed by dinner at the Café Ambio at Holker Hall. All other meals will be taken at the Castle Green Hotel.
Abstracts (max 200 words) of potential contributions for the conference may now be submitted (in A4 Word Format using the template provided) by e-mail to the Conference Manager, Prof. A.J. (Tony) Wickham, using the address firstname.lastname@example.org
Abstracts may be on ANY aspect of nuclear graphite research, but consideration should be given to the general theme of the meeting when preparing the abstract. Early submission is recommended to ensure that the most suitable programme can be developed.
For all abstracts accepted, full papers will be required by the date of the conference. As with previous EdF conferences, these will be independently peer reviewed and published in a hard-back open-access proceedings volume which will be distributed free to all attendees. Again, a template is provided.

The Castle Green Hotel lies on the main A684 road between the M6 (exit 37) and Kendal, on the right hand side heading towards to the town when the town comes in sight. There is free parking on site. The nearest station is OXENHOLME on the west coast main line from Euston, from where the hotel is 5-minute taxi ride. Delegates without their own transport can reach Kendal by taxi in less than 5 minutes.
The hotel receives excellent reviews. It has an indoor pool and leisure facilities in addition to a welcoming bar and friendly staff.
POSSIBLE SITE VISIT
Consideration is being given to arranging a visit to the Sellafield site on Friday October 19th for a small number of delegates, with priority being given to those who have never visited and subject to being able to satisfy security requirements. Further details will be available later, but we will be assisting with additional accommodation requirements if needed.
